How your data is stored

Every email you CC or BCC to a memex.email address is content-addressed and stored in R2 cloud storage. Each message is hashed (SHA-256) at ingest. The hash is its address. Duplicate emails are stored once, regardless of how many tags reference them.

Your archive is personal. Each participant on an email gets their own namespace with their own copy of the message reference. You only see emails you were a participant on. BCC tags are completely private -- visible only to the sender.

Data is always stored

Regardless of your plan, every email is archived. The free tier limits how far back you can browse (90 days), not how much is stored. Upgrading to Pro unlocks your complete history instantly. Nothing is ever deleted based on what you pay -- only visibility is gated. This is a trust-critical distinction.

Export formats

Every message in your archive can be exported in three standard formats. No proprietary wrappers, no conversion fees.

EML

Individual messages as standard RFC 5322 email files. Opens in any email client.

MBOX

Bulk archive of an entire tag. One file, standard format. Import into Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or any MBOX-compatible tool.

CSV

Spreadsheet-friendly export with sender, date, subject, and body. Open in Excel, Google Sheets, or any data tool.

How to export

Three ways to get your data out, depending on what you prefer.

Web UI

Open your archive, select a tag, and download. One click.

API

Programmatic export via the REST API. Automate backups or integrate with your own tools.

CLI

Run mx export from the command line. Supports all three formats.

Our promises

You own your data

Your messages belong to you. We are custodians, not owners. We store and index your email so you can search and browse it. We do not mine it, train models on it, or share it.

Passive by design

Memex never sends email except a one-time onboarding message when you first encounter a memex.email address. No spam, no notifications, no marketing. A quiet archive that stays out of your way.

Delete anytime

Request full account deletion at any time. We will remove all your messages, metadata, and account data. No retention tricks, no dark patterns. GDPR-ready with full DSAR support.

Built on email standards

Memex stores standard email (RFC 5322, MIME). Your archive is not a proprietary database -- it is email files, content-addressed and hash-verified. Any tool that reads email can read your export.

No lock-in

If Memex ever shuts down, you get your data first. We will provide at least 90 days notice and a bulk export tool. Your archive will not disappear.

No ads. No tracking.

We do not serve advertisements, track your behavior across the web, or sell your information to third parties. Paid team plans fund the service. Individual use is free forever.

Domain opt-out

Domain administrators can publish a single DNS TXT record (_memex.example.com TXT "v=memex1; policy=reject") to prevent Memex from processing their domain's email. No account needed, no contact with us required. Takes effect immediately.
